About City Court Records

In Alabama, court records are kept at the county level. Cities don't run the court system. The Circuit Clerk in each county holds records for Circuit Court and District Court. To find court records for someone in a city, you search through the county where that city is. Each city page tells you which county to contact.

City municipal courts handle traffic tickets and local code violations. For those records, call the city's municipal court. But for civil suits, criminal cases, divorce, and other court matters, you go to the county. The Circuit Clerk has those files.

Some cities sit in two or more counties. Hoover, for example, spans Jefferson and Shelby counties. Cases can be filed in either county based on where the event took place or where the people live. If you can't find a case in one county, try the other.
